Would you sign a blank sheet of paper for an opposing party in a conflict after active warfare?
Hello, I am Aluda Goglichidze, author and leader of the mega program “Journey to the Future.”
Right now, I am standing about two kilometers from the demarcation line of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, and I want to recall a story that happened to me thirty years ago involving an Abkhaz peer.
Due to ethical considerations, I will not mention this person’s first or last name. I will only emphasize the circumstances: this was not just any young representative of the Abkhaz side. He had participated in military operations, served as a tanker, and had severe health issues as a result of the war. Forgive me, but I cannot and will not say more. Even now, it is emotionally difficult for me to recall this and even to speak about it, but I believe this story deserves attention.
In 1996, in Yalta, Ukraine, we met as part of a Caucasus-wide youth peace movement during the conference “Peace to the Caucasus – 2.” Georgian, Abkhaz, and Ossetian youth agreed to cooperate.
At the moment of signing this agreement, due to the lack of technical tools, we were unable to convert our agreement into a printed document. Night was falling, our peers were preparing to leave for home, and we found ourselves at a dead end.
The question arose: What could be the way out? What should we do? How could we turn our agreement into an official document?
At that exact moment—nothing more, nothing less—my Abkhaz peer took a blank sheet of paper, signed it, and asked me to print the text in Tbilisi and send it to him. Seeing this, our Ossetian peers signed it as well. And I, of course, fulfilled my agreement.
On the surface, there might seem to be nothing extraordinary or major about this story. However, I do not believe it is a banal, everyday occurrence—especially considering that we had first met in 1994 in Nunspeet, Netherlands. I want to highlight that there, where opposing parties from every Caucasian conflict were represented, only we and the Abkhaz group managed to reach an agreement, which laid the groundwork for organizing the Yalta conference.
Many years have passed, and for a very long time, I did not talk about this topic at all. But recently, no matter whom I asked whether they would sign a blank sheet of paper for an Abkhaz peer, I simply haven’t received a positive answer.
Now let us picture this clearly: we were meeting for the second time. Only a few years had passed since the war—a hot phase, a bloody war. At such a time, there are always barriers, stereotypes, rejection, hatred, and even aggression. Yet your peer trusts you, signs a blank piece of paper, and hands you his signature.
I recall this story because when I analyze what brought about this outcome, I will be honest and say: by that time, I had already received a certain education in conflict management and the art of negotiation, and I believe this was an important prerequisite for that result.
Of course, this signature did not resolve our conflict or our problems. But you will likely agree that it was an act of declaring trust. Trust is essential if we are to move from a fragile phase of peace to a full, sustainable peace—which is necessary for everyone, regardless of which side of this demarcation line we stand on.
Therefore, I believe that for anyone who watches this video from any side, there is something noteworthy about how we were able to take such an action thirty years ago.
This story serves as a source of inspiration for me to work on this issue—to work on conflict management, spreading knowledge, and peacebuilding.
That is precisely why, from August 1st to 8th, at the “Art Meurneoba” base in Tsalenjikha, we are hosting a Peace Summer Camp for adolescents aged 13–17.
Peace comes through education. Peace comes through new skills and different attitudes, without which it is impossible to rebuild broken bridges.
I deeply believe that if thirty years ago, during the hot phase of the conflict, we were able to take such a step toward one another, then after all this time, this is truly the stage where we must continue working on peacebuilding with new inspiration, new energy, and new faith.
This is my message. I believe history is very important, but we must not live in the past. We need the past to envision the future, to plan the future, and to walk toward the future.
This is why we started “Journey to the Future,” and this Peace Camp is one of the steps and stages of that journey.
I hope my message will be understood correctly, and I hope you will join us in this movement toward a peaceful future.
And finally, I will say: someone might still ask, “What was so special about this story? What was important about it? Why should I have shared it and taken up your valuable time?”
To answer that question, I will conclude this video address with the same question I started with:
After active warfare, would you sign a blank sheet of paper for an opposing party in a conflict?
Thank you very much. Best of luck, and until next time!
